Ideas For What Food You Should Take on Your Train Journeys

Every summer holidays, we used to travel to my grandparents’ place – it was an overnight journey. Like most kids, my sister and I, used to look forward to the train journey. Apart from the journey, meeting new passengers, the chaos, the scenery and window seats, one of the most interesting things on the train ride was ‘food time’ – some how eating on trains was so much fun.

Here are some of my favorite dishes for train travel:

1. Lemon Rice and boiled egg

2. Idlis and pickles

3. Curd rice and pickles

4. Poori and Potato Fry

5. Fruits – This I highly recommend – Whatever mains you pack, make sure you take some fruits along.

6. Sandwiches – This is actually my favorite – I use at least four different kinds of fillings and the kids like the variety.

7. Snacks – like murukku, om podi, bhelpuri etc…

8. Sweets – Again like fruits, this is something I rarely forget to take along – I normally have them when I am having some quiet time and am enjoying the view from my window.

Now that we have covered the food, let’s get into the food accessories – I mean other things that you need to take along with your food – things that will make your meal enjoyable and tidying up after you have eaten easy. Here is the list of food accessories you must take along for your train travel:

1. Paper Plates

2. Spoons and Forks – And don’t forget some serving spoons as well.

3. Tissues – dry and wet tissues – wet tissues come in very handy, so don’t forget them.

4. Plastic bags – for garbage collection

5. Bottles of water

One more tip about packing food – always pack them in individual packs – easier and less messy when serving – especially when you have little kids traveling with you.

If you don’t like packing food and taking it along with you then you can always order food in the train kitchen or you can buy some food at one of the stations – Long queues puts me off from buying food at the stations – If you don’t mind this then go ahead and buy – food is quite cheap and also less work for you.

Travel and teaching English as a foreign language abroad are some of the most interesting and mind-altering experiences we can have. We travel to meet new people, to experience new cultures, to see bold new sights and to try new foods. We need to be careful though, some foods can make you really sick, turning your dream trip into a nightmare. The quantities of bacteria, protozoa, molds, fungi and parasites ingested from food is truly amazing.

Here Are Four Food Areas to Be Wary of When Traveling Abroad

o Water

The old saying, “you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink” That’s because ole horsey knows that water is most often unsafe for you to drink on foreign soil. Water supplies in many countries are subject to a multitude of factors you don’t want to know. Drink only bottled, treated (by you) or boiled (preferably by you) water when traveling abroad.

o Water-based Juices

Didn’t we just say, “don’t drink the water”? Well, if your lemonade or other juice is made with local water, you don’t know where the water comes from – and maybe you don’t want to know, either. The same holds true of ice and ice cubes. You can’t be sure what the water source was they are made from.

o Fresh Salads

Again, “don’t drink the water” holds true. Yes, even for fresh salads. What do you think they “washed” the vegetables with? If you don’t know or can’t be sure, you’d better not eat that garden salad. I don’t care how “good” it looks. You could be expressing your regrets later the same day quicker than you can ask, “where’s the toilet?”

o Street Vendor Foods

Are you kidding me? You’re not actually going to eat something from the cart of that slovenly-looking guy on the corner, are you? Hey, I know that you’re here to have new experiences and to try new things. But is a tour of all the local toilet facilities and emergency rooms on your list too? If not, then be very careful about what you put in your mouth (in more ways than one, too).

By all means travel, explore new regions, see new sights and wonders, learn and grow. Just remember to be wary of these seven foods mentioned here when traveling abroad. Singapore is a very diverse country that has a melting pot of various ethnic cultures. It is evidently seen throughout the country with distinct influences of Malay, Chinese, and Indian cultures. Malay Food

Malay food in Singapore has a strong heritage that can be found from where the source originated from; in the neighboring country of Malaysia. Malay food in general is quite spicy and often very hearty where many of the foods are cooked in coconut milk. Definite must try items include nasi lemak (fragrance rice cooked with coconut milk and chili), beef redang (beef curry), mee rebus (noodle dish in thick peanut gravy), and satay (barbecue sticks of meat, such as chicken, beef and lamb, served with a hearty peanut gravy known as the satay sauce).

Indian Food

Indian food in Singapore can be found with both Southern and Northern Indian styles. Southern India style typically is spicier than Northern Indian style, and typically vegetarian options are in abundance with both types of Indian foods. Furthermore they also have a localized twist using various South East Asian ingredients. Must try Indian foods include roti prata (a flat type of pan fried pancake served with curry), chicken briyani (chicken curry rice served with fragrant rice), and fish head curry.

When traveling to Singapore, be sure to sample a little bit of cuisines from each of the above major ethnic backgrounds to get the most complete experience of Singapore. You will be definitely spoilt for choice by enjoying the great selection of food in Singapore.

Saving Money on Food Expenses During Travel

Travelling will always cost money, no matter what they tell you. From gas to travel money to food money, even just going to the next city means spending money. Well, you can save money on food while travelling and it is quite easily accomplished. Here’s how:

Make your own food and put it in a bag. If the travelling means having to have to stop to have lunch somewhere, it is best to just make the lunch way ahead of time and bring it with you. Sandwiches travel well and they can last for a few hours in a cool car. If it is impossible to keep them cool, you can always place them inside a waterproof container and stow it with the rest of the drinks in the cooler. Oh yes, bring drinks along, you’ll need that for the long drive. Stay away from saucy meals when travelling, they don’t keep well and you may experience discomfort.

Coolers are a good investment, whether you are a traveller or not. It is an essential when travelling as this is where you can stow all you fluids for the travel. Water is best kept frozen a day in advance before the travel time. The ice will melt after a few hours and the water would be a good thirst quencher when it is still cold and you don’t even have to stop anywhere and dig out some quarters just to get to machine that sells cool water. Stay away from soda drinks, not only do they make kids hyperactive, but a hyperactive kid or kids in a car is not a very comforting experience. Also, it makes for flatulence.

Coupons are still very useful when one want to eat on a budget. In the past you needed magazines and newspapers to cut out the coupons from, today, the internet saves the day. You can Google some food coupons for restaurants or fast food places that you may pass on the way to your destination. Print them out just before you leave so that they would be valid when you get there. Grocery coupons are also good if you plan to cook during the trip.

Taking a plane may be expensive but this could also save you on money. There are in-flight meals offered if it is a long trip, however, only snack will be served if it is not a long trip. There are also some flights that don’t offer snacks at all, especially if they are just 15 minute flights. Check with the travel agents what the in-flight offers are.

If there is a hostel or a motel on the way that has a kitchenette, then you can definitely cook your own food. Check out if there is a small kitchen before making hasty decisions, though. There are a lot now that does not allow cooking. Find out the places that have kitchenettes online before making travel arrangements. When there a place that offers the service, make reservations immediately. You do not want to lose out on the room or rooms if the place gets fully booked.

There are so many ways to save on food when travelling, all it takes is careful planning and a little bit of imagination. If you are taking your own car then you can definitely bring enough grocery and food supplies to your heart’s content.

Foods to Avoid During Babymoon Travelling

When you are at babymoon travelling, you wish to enjoy the trip including your meal and food. However, to give the best for your baby, avoid harmful foods is as essential as eating healthy foods. You need to take care of your pregnancy nutrition during the whole pregnancy process and it is important to know what you shouldn’t eat and drink. Here are some ideas to help you avoid the foods that might be harmful for your baby.

Seafood 
You might be curious especially you know that seafood is a great source of protein and iron. In fact, there is a British study suggests that skimping on seafood during pregnancy may contribute to poor verbal skills, behavioural problems and other developmental issues during childhood. The omega 3 fatty acids in many fish help to promote your baby’s brain development too.

However, there are some fish contain potentially dangerous levels of mercury. Generally, the bigger and older the fish, the more mercury it may contain. Your baby’s developing nervous system might be damaged is you consume on fish that have too much mercury. Pregnant women should avoid fish such as shark, king mackerel, tilefish and swordfish. These fish have high level of mercury which may harm the baby.

There fish that contain no mercury and safe to consume are salmon, catfish, shrimp, pollock and canned light tuna. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advises that should not eat more than 12 ounces a week of canned light tuna.

When babymoon travelling, it is important to avoid raw fish and shellfish like oysters and clams. You wouldn’t know whether they are caught in polluted water and contain harmful bacteria or viruses. To play safe and for your baby’s safety and healthy, avoid raw fish and shell fish.

Meat and poultry
Always make sure that the restaurant serves you fully cook meats and poultry. This is to prevent food borne illness. You can also use a meat thermometer to make sure it is fully cooked. A food borne illness known as listeriosis may harm your baby when you expose to the risk of bacterial food poisoning. Your baby may get sick due to the bacterial food poisoning. This is important for you to know that during pregnancy, changes in your metabolism and circulation may increase the risk of bacterial food poisoning. And your reaction may be more serious than if you weren’t pregnant.

If you are not sure they serve you fully cook meats and poultry, avoid them completely. This is a wise choice rather than consume food that might harm you and your baby.

Dairy products
Dairy products that contain unpasteurized milk may lead to food-borne illness. Although we know that dairy products such as skim milk and cottage cheese are essential nutrients during pregnancy, we also need to choose wisely and only eat soft cheeses that are clearly labeled as being made with pasteurized milk. Don’t eat dairy products such as brie, camembert, feta and blue cheese that contain unpasteurized milk.

Caffeine
It is advised that don’t take caffeine at all during pregnancy period. Studies suggest that drinking too much caffeine may be associated with a small decrease in birth weight. It also increase risk of miscarriage and stillbirth. Caffeine might affect your baby’s heart rate and breathing and a large study published in 2008 suggests that 200 milligrams of caffeine a day during pregnancy may slow fetal growth.

If you really think to get a cup of coffee, gynae suggests you consume to less than 200mg a day during the second and third trimesters and totally avoiding caffeine during the first trimester.

While babymoon travelling, you might need to avoid your hotel breakfast that prepare you with a cup of coffee. A glass of orange juice or other fruit juices are good for your health during the trip.

Alcohol
Avoid alcohol entirely during your pregnancy and your babymoon holidays. Although one drink isn’t like to hurt your baby, but no level of alcohol has been proved safe during pregnancy too. Mother who drink alcohol have a higher risk of miscarriage and stillbirth. Moderate drinking also can impact your baby’s brain development. To protect your baby from fetal alcohol syndrome, avoid alcohol at all.
